We were devastated to learn of Chai's death. She died on January 30, 2016at the Oklahoma City Zoo. She was only 37 years old. It was Stella's passion that started our Children Helping Elephants effort, but it was the story of Chai's deeply depressing life that pulled me in and made me do everything I could to try and help Chai and Bamboo. I felt connected to Chai's experience as a female, and especially as a mother. The one solace in Chai moving to OKC was that she would have the opportunity to be around young elephants again. When the OKC Zoo's 4 year-old elephant Malee died in October, I could not get Chai out of my mind. I kept imagining her beginning to bond with Malee and then losing that relationship to a different strain of the same disease that killed her own daughter, Hansa. I'm sure there will be a medical cause revealed in Chai's death. But essentially, I believe she died of sadness and hopelessness. I wish she had had the opportunity for at least one day of the kind of freedom Stella imagined for her in this watercolor. One day of relative freedom of choice.
